Mind Chatter - That Little Monster!
It is no wonder that the book and movie were entitled, "The Secret". The Law of Attraction is really very straight forward and everyone who reads about it seems to intuitively know that it makes sense. But the real secret lies in being able to make it work for you!
Change your thoughts and the world will change for you! Very simple, but HOW do you change your thoughts?
It is said that each person has over 60,000 thoughts per day and chances are that the thoughts you have today will be very similar to the thoughts you had yesterday and the day before and the day before. So how do you break the pattern? HOW can you really change your thoughts?
This is the SECRET to making the Law of Attraction work for you and it is often very difficult to achieve. As a Life Coach, I encounter this problem more than any other with my clients. And I'll be the first to admit that even I struggle with this same issue as well.
There are many things that you can do to make it easier for you to change your thoughts. The operative word here is CHANGE. Unless you make a conscious effort to do something different, you will not break out of your current thought pattern.
What are your 60,000+ daily thoughts about?
The first thing you need to do is be aware of all the activity going on in your mind. You can't change something that you're not even aware of.
Here is an example of some "mind chatter" that might go on while you are out shopping:
"Look at that mother with her unruly child. She is obviously not a disciplinarian and lets her child run amok."
"Oh, I like that dress, but it wouldn't look good on me. My legs are too fat and ugly to wear something like that."
"What's that smell? It reminds me of my childhood when my mother regularly baked bread at home. I resent the fact that my parents got divorced and ruined my childhood.
"I need to buy a new outfit for my upcoming vacation. I love vacations but I'm frightened of flying. What if the plane crashes?
Does this sort of inner dialogue sound familiar?
Pay attention to your "mind chatter" and you will discover a lot about yourself.
-Are you being judgmental of others?
-Are you putting yourself down?
-Are you dwelling on the past?
-Are you so focussed on the future that "the result" means more than the journey?
-Are you worried about things that will most likely never happen?
All of these types of thought create negativity and lower your vibrational frequency. You might understand the Law of Attraction and even think you practice it. After all, you recited your daily affirmations and you wrote in your gratitude journal this morning!
One way to keep your vibrational frequency high is to live in the present. The past is gone, never to return and the future is not yet here. All we ever have is the present moment.
The true key to happiness is to live in the now. The best book that I have ever read on this subject is Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now
So pay attention to these 60,000+ thoughts and when you catch yourself judging others, dwelling on the past, pining for the future, or being negative, just say, "Stop that thought!" amd replace it with something positive.
It might be helpful to put some Post-It notes that say What am I thinking?" in prominent places around your home or office to remind yourself to be conscious of your thoughts. I have them on my fridge and computer monitor.
And I highly recommend that you read Eckhart Tolle's book, The Power of Now> It will help you to live in the present moment and assist you in making the Law of Attraction work for you.
